LANDSLIDE - A Portrait of President Herbert Hoover

In association with Stamats Communications and Iowa Public Television, The Duncan Group has completed a one hour public television biography called LANDSLIDE - A Portrait of President Herbert Hoover. The film premieres nationwide on PBS on MONDAY, OCTOBER 26 - 10:00 P.M. EASTERN TIME, 9:00 P.M. CENTRAL TIME.

TEN INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT PRESIDENT HERBERT HOOVER

  • Herbert Hoover did not attend high school. After educating himself, he entered the inaugural class of Stanford University at age 17.

  • Herbert Hoover's first job out of college was shoveling ore in a Nevada City, California mine for 20 cents an hour.

  • Herbert Hoover was one of America's most well traveled presidents, reportedly having circumnavigated the globe seven times before taking office - and this before the advent of aviation.

  • As head of the The Commission for Relief In Belgium (CRB) during World War I, Herbert Hoover enjoyed informal diplomatic immunity, traveling freely through enemy lines to negotiate with German leaders. He is thought to be the only American citizen permitted to do so.

  • Since President Hoover was a Quaker he did not take an oath of office. He "affirmed" his presidency.

  • Though required by law to accept a salary as President of the United States, Hoover's personal policy was to accept no compensation for public service. Instead, he donated part to charity and used the rest to supplement the salaries of men who worked for him.

  • The Star Spangled Banner, written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key, was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution signed into law on March 3, 1931 by then-President Herbert Hoover.

  • Herbert Hoover was the first president to have a telephone directly on his desk - his predecessors thought it undignified to talk on the phone from the presidential desk and had used the telephones in an adjoining office.

  • Herbert Hoover's youngest son Alan kept two alligators as pets while living in the White House. The first family also had several dogs, including an Irish Wolfhound named Patrick, two Fox Terriers Sonnie and Big Ben, an Eskimo dog named Yukon and an Elkhound named Weejie.

  • Herbert Hoover was the last President to have his term of office end on March 3. Henceforth, presidential terms have ended on January 20th with the inauguration of their successor.
