SYNOPSIS

AMAZING BUTTERFLY QUEST

A Large Format Film & Classroom Educational Series

In the Cordillera Blanca region of northern Peru stands Huascarán, the world's highest tropical mountain. Jutting almost four miles into the heavens, it is frigid, snow-capped and rugged. Within a few hundred miles of its peak can be found almost every ecosystem on earth, but few are as forbidding as Huascarán.

Yet in this extreme mountain environment can be found the most fragile and delicate creature of all - the butterfly. And as climate change impacts the Andes and Huascarán, it is also impacting the species that call Huascarán home.

There are more species of butterflies in Peru than anywhere else on earth. Incredibly, many have adapted where seemingly hardier species have failed. And as parts of the Andes suffer through climate change, some butterfly species are learning to adapt to the change.

Amazing Butterfly Quest will explore the mysteries of butterfly survival in the mountain world of the Inca. We'll follow an international team of scientists on an arduous expedition to the heights of Huascarán in search of a rare blue butterfly. Our adventure will take us through some of the most spectacular scenery on earth, as we raft down turbulent white waters, trek across steep gorges, traverse perilous glaciers and climb rugged cliffs.

Along with our scientists, we'll discover the surprising ways butterflies and moths are adapting to this forbidding terrain: their potent array of chemical weapons, their facility for disguise and deception, their acrobatic flying skills and their amazing powers of transformation.

We'll also encounter some remarkable people along the way - from hardy mountain villagers to Andean shaman as they try to preserve their century's old lifestyle.

Amazing Butterfly Quest is more than a film, it's a campaign. Our efforts to educate viewers on butterfly natural history, climate change and the issues surrounding Peru's indigenous population include a large format film, a 3 part classroom series and a large-scale community outreach campaign.

The large format film will be distributed by the world's leading producer of large format films for IMAX® venues, MacGillivray Freeman Films. Other project partners will be announced soon.
