SYNOPSIS
RIVER
OF DOUBT
Theodore Roosevelt's Greatest Adventure
A Large Format Film & Classroom Educational Series
In
February 1914, Theodore Roosevelt, his son Kermit, and a small
contingent of naturalists and explorers set out on a journey
into the vast unknown heart of Brazil. Sponsored by the American
Museum of Natural History, their mission was to collect wildlife
specimens and to track the course of the last great uncharted
river in South America: the River of Doubt. TR had just lost
a bitterly fought election and sought solace in "the
hidden spirit of the wilderness."
The co-leader of the expedition was Colonel Candido Rondon
who had first set eyes on the River of Doubt. He was Brazil's
greatest explorer who for years had crisscrossed the Amazon
surveying its unknown terrain, sometimes surviving on nothing
more than piranha - which endeared him to the adventure loving
Roosevelt.
But this expedition proved far more strenuous - and perilous
- than Roosevelt and Rondon ever imagined. A month long journey
up crocodile infested rivers was followed by a two month mule
trek across the stark Brazilian plateau. Pack animals died,
precious supplies were lost - biting ants, wasps and mosquitoes
plagued the men. Disease took its toll as well.
For Kermit Roosevelt - at 24 - there was an agony far worse
than the malaria he contracted: he was lovesick. Recently
engaged to the winsome Belle Ward, all he wanted was to see
his father safely and expeditiously home. But the Old Lion
- with his insatiable sense of wonder - relished the adventure.
Until they reached the River of Doubt.
There
the expedition took a decidedly dark and deadly turn. Moving
down the rushing river in heavy log canoes - there was no
turning back. No one knew where the river would lead them
or when they would see civilization again. If ever. What lay
ahead was starvation, fatal accidents, madness - and even
murder.
RIVER OF DOUBT - Theodore Roosevelt's Greatest Adventure may
well be the ultimate giant screen adventure. In the best of
company - TR himself - we'll view the stunning vistas of the
world's largest wetlands - Brazil's Pantanal - home to anacondas,
caimans, and jaguars. We'll cross the stark and eerie high
plateau, then experience the dangerous descent of the River
of Doubt. Today it is called the Rio Teodoro, after the fearless
Rough Rider who helped place it on the map.
