CITY OF THE DAWN

CITY OF THE DAWN is a documentary co-production of New Momentum in association with The Duncan Group. The film was shot on location in Auroville, India during April 2008.

Auroville is a small city in southeast India created out of the dream of Indian spiritual leader Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator, Mother Mirra Alfassa. They envisioned a city where individuals would live as "willing servitors of the Divine" in an experiment to realize human unity. The experimental city of Auroville was considered a potential cornerstone, the foundation of a place where people of all faiths, cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds could come to work on living a more evolved life. Today, the dream of Auroville has become a reality. It's a thriving and growing community that enjoys international support from a variety of progressive thinkers and includes support from agencies of the United Nations and the Government of India.

For more information on Auroville, please visit www.Auroville.org.

The film's executive producer is Francis Rothluebber. According to Francis, "Our desire is to create a film that is not only aesthetically pleasing and mentally stimulating, but also a work that an individual can spend time with, reflect upon, and use as a resource to tap into a deeper part of themselves - those depths that ignite and transform us."

Director of Photography Chip Duncan says, "I'm naturally skeptical and was no different when it came to Auroville. What we found, however, was not just an experimental city working to achieve utopian values. We found a group of people committed to trying to live within a value system many can admire. Many of those we interviewed in the film have been living and working in Auroville for more than a generation. While it may be too early to define overall success, there are some extraordinary examples of specific accomplishment. This is true when it comes to the ways they're conducting business both within and outside of Auroville. It's true about the way they've reclaimed a now-flourishing landscape from acres of environmentally depleted land. It's true when it comes to notions of compassion and living a sustainable lifestyle. While the film City of the Dawn and discussion of the city of Auroville may motivate as many questions and criticisms as they do answers or approval, I am confident that the film will give viewers a sense of the possible."
