PATTY
OSTERMICK researcher, associate
producer
Patricia
D. Ostermick graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
in 1971 with a degree in Nursing. Upon graduation she worked
as a staff nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. In 1992,
she earned a Master's degree in Library and Information Science
from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Ostermick worked
initially as a freelance researcher for the Duncan Group during
the production of the 13-part series, Mystic Lands. She joined
the company's production team as a researcher and associate
producer in 1995. She continues those roles today, as well as
serving as Educational Producer for the outreach education components
of the company's projects.
What
inspires you most about your work on documentary films?
The intellectual challenges of working on substantive issues,
being given the charge to fully embrace the research process
as the cornerstone of each production, and the daily opportunity
to expand my intellectual, philosophical and personal horizons
are key inspirations of my work at the Duncan Group.
If
you could recommend just one book to visitors to the DuncanEntertainment.com
web site, what would it be and why?
I would suggest Anna Quindlen's A Short Guide to a Happy Life.
A favorite as a graduation gift, I find this small book a
treasure. Quindlen writes with great clarity and eloquence.
She thoughtfully examines what it means to create a life lived
with intention and savored in each moment.
During
your time working with the Duncan Group, what experiences
have you found most rewarding?
Among the many rewarding aspects of my work (incredibly, I
am paid to read and explore issue/ideas in-depth every day),
I feel that it is a unique privilege to work as part of the
special team that is the Duncan Group. My colleagues are smart,
passionate, visionary and accomplished professionals. They
are fun loving, hard working and insatiably curious. Every
day they bring the full measure of their efforts and talents
to making a positive difference in their world.
What
is your favorite Duncan Group production and why?
I feel that as a body of work our Mystic Lands series is among
my favorite company productions. This thirteen-part series
introduces viewers to some of the world's most significant
"sacred geography". In its artistic blending of
the past and present, the series details the legends, mysteries,
history and contemporary spiritual practices that surround
these influential places. In my opinion, this series showcases
the special talents and sensitivity the Duncan Group brings
to, among other areas, the photographic, writing, editing,
and research aspects of the documentary process.
